Spring Is the Perfect Time to Show Up Fresh
Let me ask you something. When was the last time you looked at your headshots and thought, “Yes, that’s exactly who I am right now”?
If you’re hesitating, you’re not alone. A lot of people push headshots to the back burner and then suddenly realize their profile photo is from three years ago – in a sweater – in November lighting – and it just feels… heavy.
Spring has this way of making you want to start fresh. New energy, brighter days, a little more pep. And honestly? That feeling translates directly into your photos.
Why Spring Wardrobes Work So Well for Branding Shots
Here’s what I’ve noticed: the clients who come to me in the spring for updated headshots almost always walk away with photos that feel alive. There’s a warmth and brightness to the season that just fits – both literally in the light and figuratively in the way people carry themselves.
Photos taken in the fall or winter aren’t bad, but they can carry that slow, cozy energy into your branding. And if you’re trying to show potential clients or employers that you’re ready, energized, and open for business, a cozy vibe might not be sending the right message.
Spring represents new life. A fresh start. And a lot of the time, that’s exactly what updated branding shots are supposed to say.
What Actually Matters When Choosing What to Wear
This is where I want to push back a little on the standard advice, because I think it misses something important.
The Rule That Still Holds Up
Skip the logos. That one’s solid. Logos pull attention away from you, and in a headshot, you are the whole point.
The Rule I’d Rethink
You’ve probably heard “avoid busy patterns.” And while I get the logic, I don’t think it’s a hard rule worth stressing over.
Here’s my take: if you have a piece you love – a bold print, a fun pattern, something that just makes you feel like you – wear it. We’ll adjust the background so it stays simple and clean, and your personality gets to shine through. The goal is for you to stand out, not your backdrop. So we simplify what’s behind you so nothing is competing with your outfit or your energy.
The Real Rule Nobody Says Out Loud
Wear what makes you feel confident and comfortable.
That’s it. Genuinely, that’s the thing.
If you show up in something stiff or “safe” but it doesn’t feel like you, that discomfort will come through in your photos. You can’t really hide it. But when you’re wearing something that makes you feel good? That comes through too – in the way you hold yourself, in your expression, in the little moments between poses where the best shots actually happen.
What I Wish Every Client Knew Before Their Session
The biggest misunderstanding I see is people thinking the outfit is the main event. It isn’t. The outfit is just the container. What matters is how you feel in it.
A few things that can help:
- Bring options. If you’re unsure between two or three pieces, bring them all. We can look at them together before we start and pick what feels right.
- Try things on beforehand. Don’t save the “just in case” outfit for the day of. Wear it around the house. Sit in it. Make sure you feel good moving in it, not just standing still.
- Consider a color analysis session. I know this sounds extra, but hear me out. Knowing which colors genuinely complement you – not just what’s trendy – can make a real difference in how your photos feel. If you’re in the Las Vegas area, my friend Morgan Morrison (featured in these photos) is incredible at this. She helps people find the colors and styles that make them feel confident and comfortable, which is exactly the energy we want to bring into your session.
Why This Actually Matters for Your Brand
Your headshots are often the first impression someone gets of you. They show up on your website, your LinkedIn, your email signature, your social profiles. They’re doing a lot of work.
And if those photos feel cold, stiff, or like a version of you from two seasons ago, they might be quietly undermining the confidence you’ve worked hard to build.
Updating your headshots in the spring – with a wardrobe that feels current and genuinely you – is one of the simplest ways to show up in alignment with where you actually are right now.
You don’t need a perfect outfit. You need one that makes you feel ready.
